The Tambopata National Reserve is 274,690 hectares (1,061 square miles) of preserved land in Southeastern Peru. The Reserve has many diverse habitats, including lowland Amazon rainforest, riverine forest, and oxbow lakes. It’s crossed by three rivers: the Malinowski, the Tambopata, and the Madre de Dios rivers.
Because of the Reserve’s protected status and secluded location, it’s incredibly biodiverse. The reserve plays host to over 1,000 species of butterflies, 100 species of mammals, around 600 species of birds, and hundreds of species of trees and plants. In fact, this reserve and surrounding region are one of the most biodiverse places on the planet!

Relax deep in the jungle at the Tambopata National Reserve. One of its highlights is the “Sandoval Lake”, teeming with vibrant flora and fauna.
TOUR SCHEDULE: SANDOVAL LAKE, YACUMAMA LAKE & PIRANHA FISHING (5D/4N)
Transportation: Car and boat.
Activities: Bird watching, hiking, paddle boat riding, botanical walking, palm lick, caimaneo (caiman watching), and nighttime walks.
Difficulty: Mild.
Clothing Recommendations: Avoid black clothing as it attracts mosquitoes. Opt for light, nature-neutral colors (green, beige, brown, gray). Always apply insect repellent and sunscreen.
Pack: Flashlights with spare batteries, rain poncho, sunglasses, swimwear, hats, medium backpack, cameras, binoculars, sandals, extra cash, and a water bottle.
DAY 1:
Reception to our traveler at the airport or bus station and transfer to our Green Jungle Tours office for registration. Then we will transfer to our pier where we will take our boat to go to the hotel (40 minutes trip), as a welcome to the hotel you will have a refreshing juice made with fruits of the region, at the same time you will be informed of the policies of our hotel by the guide, then we will settle in our rooms provided.
After a pleasant rest we will visit the monkey island located in the middle of the Madre de Dios River a couple of minutes from our hotel, there you can see different species of monkeys even a hybrid species, hopefully we can also observe sloths and turtles, we return to the hotel for lunch.
After a delicious lunch and a small siesta, we will have a two-hour hike in the dense tropical forest, guided by an expert local guide, who will take us through our trails and we can see a variety of medicinal plants and trees that can be more than six hundred years old, On our trails you will always have the opportunity to see wildlife such as monkeys, parrots, macaws, squirrels, reptiles, insects, frogs, arachnids, among others, feel the pure energy of the mother jungle living magical moments inside the Tambopata National Reserve.
At night we take our boat to go in search of nocturnal animals that are always on the banks of the Madre de Dios River, we have the opportunity to see alligators of different sizes, owls, nightjars and hopefully the world's largest rodent capybaras, we return for dinner.
DAY 2:
One of the best times to see abundant wildlife is at sunrise or sunset in our case we chose to leave at dawn in our boat towards Sandoval Lake located within the Tambopata National Reserve, witness the lush biodiversity that has Sandoval Lake is simply incomparable, to reach Lake Sandoval we walk along a wooden path of almost 3 km (1.8 miles). Along the walk we are always surprised by the rich fauna that has this place, at the end of the road we find a small dock where we take a rowboat to make our tour of Lake Sandoval in this journey we might see black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, wild ducks, and much more, we return to the lodge before noon for our lunch.
In the afternoon we go out to visit a family of natives belonging to the "Matsigenka" culture where we will interact with them learning part of their culture, we will learn to use bows and arrows, to spin and weave cotton to make their clothing called (Cushma), they also teach us to make ropes using the bark of plants and finally show us their ingenuity to make fire just using nature, we return to the hotel for a pleasant rest.
At dusk the jungle begins to offer us a majestic night life, very different from the usual day life, for this tour we will have to go out with our flashlights and we will go into the trails in search of nocturnal wildlife such as porcupines, sloths arachnids, insects, reptiles, opossums, night monkeys, owls, among others. We return to the hotel for dinner and then rest.
DAY 3:
This nice adventure begins at dawn, with our boat we navigate upstream on the Madre de Dios River for about 50 minutes until we reach the parrot and macaw clay lick "La Cachuela", on the way we have the option to appreciate the beautiful radiant sunrise that nature gives us. Once there in the clay lick we can see on the cliffs of the river different species of medium-sized macaws, parrots, parakeets and sometimes sloths, in a good day you could see up to 7 species of these birds. Every day only in the mornings these birds go to eat clay that contains mineral salts and according to research this clay also helps to improve the digestion and metabolism of the birds, after having had an unforgettable experience we return to the hotel for our breakfast.
After a good breakfast we go to visit a farm (local crops) where we will learn to graft plants and see soil types, we can also taste and see typical plantations of the rainforest, such as coffee, different types of Cacao, citrus, ingas, bananas, among others. We return to the hotel around noon.
After a pleasant Amazonian lunch and a short rest we will walk along a path talking about the giant trees until we reach one of them with more than 700 years old, right there begin at the same time the hanging bridges that are installed between the trees, there you will witness the rich fauna that has this layer of the forest called "canopy" while walking along the bridges you could see toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, monkeys, lizards, orchids, epiphytes plants and other things.
DAY 4:
Having had a magical night and having been filled with the pure and clean energy of the jungle, we are ready to continue enjoying our well-deserved vacation, this time we leave after breakfast to venture into the KAYAK boats, this tour consists of paddling near the banks of the Madre de Dios river with the purpose of looking for wildlife such as: endangered turtles, white caimans, kingfishers, herons and with some luck anaconda. For this adventure with a lot of adrenaline we must wear life jackets that the guide in charge will provide, we return to the hotel around noon.
We leave the hotel at sunset heading to the city, then we will take a vehicle that will take us to the impressive Lake Yacumama which has an exuberant scenic beauty and has the most impressive sunset in the region, this lake is also home to hundreds of macaws, parrots and parakeets, on many occasions you can see black caimans, herons, cormorants, wild ducks, swallows, 4 varieties of piranhas and with a lot of luck a family of river otters. In this tour of Lake Yacumama we will use a medium rowing boat that will take us to the point where we usually fish piranhas, which in turn is very easy to do with small hooks, piranha that we catch we take a picture with it and then return it to its aquiferous environment, so as not to diminish the food source of the animals that fish. After dark we return to our hotel.
DAY 5:
We leave for the city after our breakfast, we stop by the office for our transfer to the airport or bus station.
This National Reserve is protected by the Peruvian state since it is a lovely landscape inhabited by the greatest diversity of flora and fauna that can be found on the planet.
In the Tambopata National Reserve we find a great quantity of exoticanimals, such as the river wolf or giant otter, peccary, anaconda, tapir, jaguar, ocelot, etc.: there are 590 different species of birds, which are more than the ones that exist in the United States.
